A pedestrian is dead after being struck by the driver of a tow truck in Toronto’s north-west end on Monday night.
The crash happened on Weston Road, near Rogers Road.
Toronto Police Service (TPS) said they were called to that area shortly before 7 p.m. for a personal injury motor vehicle collision.
In a news release, TPS said a 24-year-old man driving a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado tow truck northbound on Weston Road in the left turning lane collided with a male pedestrian who was standing in the center lane on Weston Road, waiting to cross the road.
The pedestrian then hit a 2021 Rav 4, which was being driven southbound on Weston Road by a 55-year-old woman. The vehicle was travelling in the far left lane, police said.
Speaking to the media near the scene on Monday night, Duty Insp. Brian Maslowski said officers arrived at the scene and immediately began performing life-saving measures before paramedics arrived.
Once there, they transported an adult to trauma centre in critical condition.
Toronto police later said that the pedestrian, whom Maslowski identified as a 40-year-old man, was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
On Monday night, he made an appeal to the public for information, including video or dashcam footage.
“It’s still very early in the investigation, and that’s why we’re seeking the assistance of anyone who was in the area and witnesses. We’re still gathering information,” Maslowski said, adding that there was a lot of vehicular traffic in the area at the time of the collision.
Charges have not been laid against the tow truck driver at this point, he said.
Roads were closed in the areas as polcie investigated.
